MS Blvd Road Clearing Update
Hello mountain residents,
David Little has provided MSCA and the community with an update regarding clearing Monte Sano Boulevard. Here is a summary:
The Boulevard is at the top of the list for tomorrow morning [Friday January 19th]. There are sagging telecom lines over the road preventing the road clearing equipment from clearing the road. HSV officials are working to contact the appropriate company to fix this. If they have to, they will figure a way to prop up the lines so the trucks/plows can get to work. The ‘will’ is definitely there, but David points out that this is a “once-in-a-generation event” – and the situation could change – so there are no guarantees it will be clear in the AM.
The roads are covered in sheets of ice and it is NOT advised to come up or down Bankhead/MS Boulevard at this time. Please also know – the ‘salt’ mixture the City uses on roads doesn’t work well below 20 degrees, so they may have to keep going back on the main arteries to re-clean them. This will likely be an effort that takes several stages of work.
STAYING CONNECTED: At least two neighborhood Facebook groups have been active in posting area updates, including requests for assistance and offers of help (although there are likely more groups). You can find those here: Monte Sano Neighborhood // Monte Sano Family & Friends
ESSENTIAL TRAVEL:
If you have a true EMERGENCY, call 911 and the proper authorities WILL come and attend to your emergency.
If you are a true ESSENTIAL WORKER like those in the medical field, call the non-emergency number @ 256-722-7100 and when they can, the HPD will try to come up and get you and take you to work. (Keep in mind that essential workers all over town are doing this as well, so please be patient.)
If the road clearing efforts falter tomorrow - the community will likely need to rely on volunteers with chains and ATVs. In true mountain fashion – we’ll find a way to take care of our neighbors running low on groceries, prescriptions and anything else they need.
Wishing you all health and warmth,
Ralph Petroff (new board member) & Brittany Gollins (exiting board member)
